PANAMA CITY, Fla. — Hurricane Isaias strengthened into a Category 3 major hurricane Friday morning, with maximum sustained winds of 120 mph, according to the National Hurricane Center.

Air Force Reserve Hurricane Hunters confirmed the increase in strength, prompting a special NHC announcement at 7:20 a.m. Central.

Landfall Expected This Evening

In its 10 a.m. Central advisory, NHC reported that Isaias was approximately 195 miles south of Pensacola, moving north-northeast at 16 mph.

The center is expected to reach the western Florida Panhandle coast this evening. NHC warns of life-threatening storm surge and devastating winds along portions of the Florida Panhandle and Alabama coasts.

Conditions will deteriorate before the center arrives, and dangerous impacts can extend well away from the eye.

Follow Evacuation Instructions

Residents should follow local evacuation instructions and complete remaining preparations immediately.

Those sheltering in place should have a safe room ready, keep multiple ways to receive emergency alerts and prepare for extended power outages. Storm surge, flooding rainfall and tornadoes remain additional threats.
