Families caring for someone with Alzheimer’s or another dementia may need extra preparation as Tropical Storm Isaias approaches. Changes in routine, unfamiliar surroundings, noise and crowds can increase confusion or distress.
The Alzheimer’s Association encourages caregivers to plan around their loved one’s specific needs.
Prepare Essential Supplies
Gather at least seven days’ worth of medications and daily necessities, along with medical records, identification, emergency contacts and familiar comfort items.
Keep important information readily accessible if power or internet service is interrupted.
Plan Ahead for Shelter
Before evacuating, confirm whether your destination or local shelter can accommodate your loved one’s needs. Ask about available assistance and special needs shelter requirements, and consider alternative arrangements when necessary.
Communicate calmly and keep routines as consistent as circumstances allow.
