Brace Yourself at the Pump: Panama City Gas Prices Hit New Highs

PANAMA CITY, Fla. – With hurricane season ramping up, Panama City drivers are facing pain at the pump as gas prices surge across Florida. The statewide average recently hit $3.84 per gallon – the highest of the year so far.

Locally, prices in the Panama City area currently average $3.79 per gallon for regular unleaded, an increase of .37 cents in just the last month. And experts say it could get worse as Gulf Coast refineries continue operating at reduced capacity during the peak hurricane period.

“Storm threats in the Gulf could cause prices to spike temporarily until refineries can resume full operations,” said AAA spokesman Mark Jenkins. “How high prices go and for how long will depend on any potential damage inflicted.”

Other factors like rising crude oil costs and OPEC production cuts have also contributed to the inflated prices. Some relief may come as schools reopen and demand eases slightly.

But for now, Panama City residents are bracing for persistently high prices, trying to cut back on non-essential trips and searching for the cheapest gas in the area. AAA advises drivers to use apps to find the lowest local prices, consolidate errands, and ensure vehicles are properly maintained to maximize fuel efficiency.

“This is shaping up to be an expensive driving season,” Jenkins said. “Panama City motorists will need to take proactive steps to minimize the impact on their wallets.”
