Supporting the Hands that Feed Our Community
This week on Commodore Cares, we turned our spotlight to two vital organizations making a difference in Bay County: Catholic Charities of Northwest Florida and Feeding the Gulf Coast. These organizations are not just providing food—they’re providing hope, dignity, and community support when it’s needed most.
Catholic Charities of Northwest Florida: A Century of Compassion
A Rich History of Service:
Founded in 1928, Catholic Charities of Northwest Florida is the oldest nonprofit in the region. Led by President and CEO Matthew Knee since 2014, the organization extends across 18 counties in the Florida Panhandle. They’re known for their comprehensive emergency assistance—whether it’s financial aid, food pantries, or disaster recovery, especially after Hurricane Michael.
Beyond immediate relief, Catholic Charities offers a baby pantry known as Matthew’s Nursery for new and expecting mothers, adoption services, and counseling. They welcome everyone, regardless of faith, and rely on the generosity of volunteers and donors. Every contribution helps keep their pantry stocked with essentials like canned vegetables, peanut butter, and other shelf-stable foods.
Feeding the Gulf Coast: Filling the Gap with Neighbors Helping Neighbors
Meeting the Need for 45 Years:
Since 1980, Feeding the Gulf Coast has served as a vital food bank network, now spanning 24 counties across western Florida, Alabama, and Mississippi. Under the leadership of Michael Ledger, the organization partners with over 800 local pantries, churches, and community groups. They provide mobile pantries, distribute food boxes, and receive donations from major retailers and local farmers.
As Michael Ledger noted during our interview: “Hunger, unfortunately, has been heightened, and we are trying to step up and fill a need with our neighbors.” This spirit of neighbor helping neighbor is at the core of their mission.
