The Commodore Cupboard: Meeting Needs, Building Dignity
🕛 Aired Thursday, November 6, 2025 on WKGC 90.7 FM
🌟 A Community of Students Helping Students
On this week’s episode of Commodore Cares, the conversation returned to the heart of campus — the Commodore Cupboard at Gulf Coast State College. What began as Michael’s Pantry in 2018 after the devastation of Hurricane Michael has grown into a campus cornerstone for support, compassion, and community care.
Coordinator Joshua Brunson, who also serves as Student Activities Coordinator and Student Advisor, joined the discussion to share how the pantry operates and why it remains vital to the college community.
“When Hurricane Michael hit, the need was immediate. Donations poured in from all over the country, and we started with foods that didn’t require cooking — just anything that could help people get by,” Brunson explained. “Now, we’re focused on balanced, cook-at-home meals and grab-and-go options that make life a little easier for students and staff.”

🤝 The Spirit of Service
Also joining the conversation was Ryan L. Terry, WKGC’s Director of Media and long-time volunteer. He reflected on how acts of service changed his perspective over the years.
“When I was younger, volunteering wasn’t really volunteering — it was just doing what you were told,” Terry laughed. “But as I got older, I realized how rewarding it is. You learn not to prejudge anyone’s circumstances. That’s what community is — learning compassion by giving your time.”
His message underscored the mission of Commodore Cares: reminding listeners that empathy and action go hand in hand.
