Ensuring a Safe Spring Break 2024

Panama City Beach’s Comprehensive Initiatives

Panama City Beach, FL– Panama City Beach Police Chief J.R. Talamantez hosted a joint press conference Thursday with Sheriff Tommy Ford and other area law enforcement agencies and elected officials in a show of support for Spring Break 2024 initiatives to keep the community safe. Chief Talamantez said past efforts have been successful, as criminal activity during Spring Break is down 44 percent.

Here is the message from Chief Talamantez:

To the Residents and Visitors of Panama City Beach:

The Panama City Beach Police Department is committed to ensuring everyone enjoys a safe, secure, and enjoyable experience in our beautiful city. As we prepare to welcome an influx of college and high school students for the start of Spring Break, we want to reassure the community that we are prepared. Our comprehensive Spring Break Safety and Enforcement Initiative outlines how we plan to achieve the goal of keeping everyone safe.

  1. Enhanced Officer Presence:

We are increasing the number of officers on patrol during peak times to ensure a swift response to any incidents and provide assistance whenever needed. Our officers will be visible in key areas, including beaches, entertainment districts, and lodging areas, to maintain a peaceful environment and safety for all.

  2. Partnerships for Safety:

Collaboration is at the heart of our approach. The Panama City Beach Police Department is working closely with neighboring law enforcement agencies, businesses, and community leaders to ensure a coordinated response to any situation that may arise. This team effort extends to state and federal agencies, ensuring we have the support needed to tackle any challenge.

  3. Focus on Prevention:

Our strategy emphasizes preventing issues before they occur. We are engaging in intelligence gathering and working proactively to address potential safety concerns. Our K9 teams and specialized units will be deployed strategically to deter and detect illegal activities, ensuring a safe environment for all.

  4. Community and Visitor Engagement:

We believe in the power of communication and community engagement. We encourage everyone to participate in making Spring Break a positive experience by respecting local laws and ordinances. We’re here to help and provide information, so don’t hesitate to approach our officers or contact us with any concerns

  5. Real-Time Monitoring and Response:

Our Real-Time Crime Center will be operational, utilizing the latest technology to monitor and swiftly respond to any incidents. This includes an expanded network of cameras in public areas to enhance our visibility and ensure a rapid response to any situation.

  6. Safety Campaigns and Information Sharing:

We are launching campaigns to share important safety tips and information about Spring Break regulations. This includes social media outreach, informational flyers, and community meetings to ensure everyone is informed and prepared.

  7. Commitment to Hospitality and Order:

We understand the importance of hospitality and the economic vitality that Spring Break brings to our community. Our approach balances the need for a welcoming atmosphere with the imperative of maintaining order and safety. We are working with local businesses and event promoters to ensure all events are conducted in a manner that respects our community’s values and laws.

  8. Your Role in Community Safety: We invite each of you to be our partners in safety. By respecting local laws, looking out for one another, and communicating with law enforcement, we can ensure that Spring Break is a memorable and positive experience for everyone.

Mayor Mark Sheldon praised the efforts of law enforcement, and said the City Council is committed to public safety. “We’ve added more training, K9s, and assets. Anyone coming here displaying criminal behavior will face criminal consequences,” Sheldon said.

Spring Break dates are March 1-April 14, with peak dates identified as March 8-14 and March 22-29. Easter is March 31.
