New Toll Road Proposed to Link I-10 and U.S. 98 in Northwest Florida

Bay County, Florida-Transportation officials in Florida have proposed constructing a new toll road to connect Interstate 10 and U.S. Highway 98 in the northwest region of the state.

The toll road is needed to provide an additional emergency evacuation route, ease traffic congestion, and support economic growth in the area, according to proponents.

The Florida Department of Transportation (FDOT) is currently reviewing options for the potential four-lane, approximately 45 to 53 mile tollway. Initial cost estimates put the project between $2.76 billion to $3.11 billion to construct. Drivers would be charged a per-mile toll estimated at 20 cents, equaling about $10 for the full length.

Here are key details about the proposal:

  • Three potential routes are under consideration, all connecting to I-10 over 20 miles east of the U.S. 231 interchange in Jackson County.
  • Routes would originate near the intersection of U.S. 98 and Tyndall Parkway.
  • Two routes would only pass through Bay, Calhoun and Jackson counties while a third would also cut through Gulf County.
  • If approved, construction would be slated for completion in 2035.

The prospect of the toll road has sparked debate among area residents. Supporters highlight the potential benefits:

  • Providing an emergency evacuation route
  • Easing commuter traffic
  • Supporting Tyndall Air Force Base and Port Panama City
  • Increasing tourism and SunPass use

However, opponents argue the high expense would outweigh any potential rewards. They also cite concerns around environmental impact and burdening low-income residents.

The proposal remains in the early phases. Further studies and county partnerships will be needed before FDOT makes any final decision on moving forward.
