McQueen Trades City Hall for School Halls as New Superintendent

Mark McQueen’s time as City Manager of Panama City came to an early end when he was tapped for a new position. Originally slated to depart September 30th, his last day was moved up to July 31st after being appointed Superintendent of Bay District Schools by Governor Ron DeSantis.

On his final Monday morning with the city, McQueen officially resigned, expressing bittersweet emotions about leaving a community he deeply cared for. During his five years as City Manager, McQueen took pride in leading the city’s rebuilding efforts to transform Panama City into a premier destination in the Florida Panhandle. He felt honored to have served the city in this capacity.

While sad to lose a talented manager, Mayor Michael Rohan recognized McQueen’s appointment as a gain for local schools. He admired McQueen’s skill in handling any issues during their partnership.

With the departure, city commissioners considered options to fill the City Manager and Community Redevelopment Agency Director roles. On McQueen’s recommendation, they divided responsibilities between the two assistant managers – naming Brandy Waldron Interim City Manager and putting Jared Jones in charge of $420 million in ongoing projects.

Waldron will continue as CRA Director without added pay. Mayor Rohan applauded the hard work and dedication of city employees like Waldron.

Mark McQueen will start his new Superintendent position Tuesday, leaving Panama City officials to begin the search for the next City Manager.
