Pathways to Success in Broadcasting: Gulf Coast State College’s Digital Media Program

Exploring the Digital Media Program at Gulf Coast State College

The digital media field is constantly evolving with new technologies and techniques. For students interested in learning hands-on skills in areas like video production, graphic design, and web development, Gulf Coast State College offers an accessible and affordable Digital Media program.

Sitting down with Daniela Oestreich, the Assistant Coordinator of Production and Technical Support, we learn more about what the program offers students. Oestreich emphasized that a key focus of the program is giving students practical abilities that translate to real-world jobs. “It’s less theory and more practical application,” she explained.

From day one, students dive right into using professional-grade equipment and software like Panasonic and Canon cameras, Adobe Creative Suite, and more. The program facilities include fully-outfitted computer labs, editing bays, and collaboration spaces that students can use to work on projects or get help from peers.

A unique aspect of the program is the hands-on experience available through the Center for Student Media. Students can get involved with Commodore Productions to work on video projects, join the student-run radio station The Alternation, or gain journalism experience writing for the Commodore Waves blog. These opportunities allow students to build a portfolio while still in school.

Oestreich shared that Digital Media graduates have gone on to work locally at places like News Channel 7, Kerrigan Marketing, and companies along the Gulf Coast. The program also helps connect students to internships and job opportunities by posting openings on their website.

For those looking to dive deeper, the Digital Media program offers several degree options including associate’s, bachelor’s degrees, and certificates in areas like video production, web design, and graphic design. New specializations in marketing and animation are also in development.

With its focus on real-world skills, state-of-the-art technology, and experiential learning, the Digital Media program at Gulf Coast State College aims to prepare students for success in our digital world. As Oestreich put it, the accessible program welcomes students from all backgrounds who have the desire to learn.
