Northwest Florida is located in an area that is prone to hurricanes. The Atlantic hurricane season runs from June 1 to November 30, and the most active months are typically August and September. In the past 100 years, there have been 127 hurricanes that have made landfall in Florida, and 25 of those have made landfall in northwest Florida.

How to Prepare for a Hurricane

There are a number of things you can do to prepare for a hurricane, including:

  • Create a hurricane plan. This plan should include a list of your important documents, such as your insurance policies, birth certificates, and passports. It should also include a list of your contact information, as well as the contact information of your family and friends.
  • Assemble an emergency kit. This kit should include food, water, first-aid supplies, batteries, a flashlight, and a radio. You should also have a way to communicate with your family and friends, such as a cell phone or a battery-powered radio.
  • Secure your home. This includes boarding up windows, bringing in outdoor furniture, and trimming trees.
  • Stay informed. Monitor the weather forecast and listen to local news broadcasts for updates.

What to Do During a Hurricane

If a hurricane warning is issued for your area, you should:

  • Stay indoors. Do not go outside unless it is absolutely necessary.
  • Listen to local news broadcasts for updates.
  • If you must go outside, be sure to wear protective gear, such as a helmet and goggles.
  • Stay away from windows and doors.
  • If you are in a mobile home, evacuate to a safe location.

What to Do After a Hurricane

After a hurricane, you should:

  • Check on your family and friends.
  • Stay away from downed power lines and other hazards.
  • Do not drive through flooded areas.
  • Report any damage to your property to your insurance company
