Artist Interview: Sarah Burris

About the Artist

Sarah Burris, the Community Relations and Marketing Coordinator for Bay County Public Library, talks to Caleb Jordan on The Mix about her piece, “Covid 19.1 (Oh the horror.)” Her collage is a part of the new exhibit, Quarantine, at the Amelia Center located on campus at Gulf Coast State College.

Sarah is an artist and a librarian, so collage represents both of these identities. Sarah’s series that she has been working on during actual quarantine is a classic image placed on top of a water color arrangement. The colorful backgrounds are what Sarah describes as, “…something lurking.”  The frightened girls depict Sarah’s own anxieties during the pandemic.

Artist Statement

“The collage images are found from books that are damaged and is a medium that merges my two identities of artist
and librarian. The additional materials included are watercolor and glitter. Watercolor is a new addition to my
work and provided a chance to play with color theory.

This Covid-19 series personifies the anxieties I have been feeling since the pandemic began. It’s not able to be seen, but it could kill and we don’t know the long lasting effects. I used scenes from early horror films and covers from vintage mystery novels to best convey that something is still
out there.”
