FEMA to Help Seniors Prepare for Emergencies

Panama City, Florida – When a major disaster strikes, the senior population is one of the most vulnerable, especially those that who may be residing alone.

Working with the Gulf County Senior Citizens Association and Bay County Council on Aging, FEMA wants to ensure that senior citizens have correct information on how to prepare for disasters and smaller emergencies.

Beginning next week, FEMA will be holding preparedness discussions with clients of these two agencies at a series of meetings and to those in attendance. Various publications will be provided to audience members to help them to better prepare for disasters.

FEMA will display a sample emergency kit at each meeting, including items that seniors should consider for their own kits. The FEMA team also will share information with audiences on planning for disasters and emergencies and well as informing the attendees on the risks of disasters like flooding, wind, fire and having the proper insurance.
