The Alzheimer’s Association is inviting Okaloosa County and Walton County area residents to unite in a movement to reclaim the future for millions by participating in the Alzheimer’s Association Walk to End Alzheimer’s. Volunteers from Niceville and Destin have joined together to form this year’s event, and BAYTOWNE WHARF AT SANDESTIN will be the site of Walk on SATURDAY, OCTOBER 12, 2013 at 8:45 AM. Start or join a team today at alz.org/walk.

In its third year, the Emerald Coast Walk to End Alzheimer’s is more than a walk. It is an experience for an estimated 400 participants in Okaloosa and Walton counties who will learn about Alzheimer's disease and how to get involved with this critical cause, from advocacy opportunities, the latest in Alzheimer’s research and clinical trial enrollment to support programs and services. In addition to the three-mile walk on a paved trail through a beachside resort, participants will enjoy a special tribute to those who have experienced or are experiencing Alzheimer’s.

In Florida, the Alzheimer’s Association spearheaded legislation that created the Purple Ribbon Task Force, which developed an Alzheimer’s state plan for Florida to serve as a guide in helping support families coping with Alzheimer’s disease. In 2009, the Alzheimer’s Association secured $1.2 million in the state budget for Alzheimer’s respite service.

“There has never been a greater need for the citizens of Okaloosa and Walton counties to join in the fight against Alzheimer’s disease by participating in Walk to End Alzheimer’s,” said Tami Miles, an Alzheimer’s Association co-chair for the Emerald Coast Walk to End Alzheimer’s and Executive Director at Brookdale Senior Living. “Funds raised will provide care and support services to the estimated 450,000 residents of Florida living with Alzheimer’s, while also contributing to advancing critically-needed research.”
